TGIFW zu Gast bei Station to Station
Podcast: Carmen Lama talks to Philipp Bürkler about fair fashion, the alternative to fast fashion.Â
In order to protect the climate and thus the planet, a change in consumption is indispensable. Not only we as consumers have to change our behaviour, but also the industry. The concepts and strategies of "more and more" are not sustainable.
One of the most environmentally damaging industries is the fashion industry. Chains like H&M or Zara as well as mail order companies like Zalando flood the global market with cheap fashion. On average, they offer new collections every 14 days. What is not sold ends up in the rubbish. Four million tonnes of textile waste every year in Europe alone. Instagram influencers, fashion bloggers and the advertising industry are the drivers of this fast-fashion industry. The effects are catastrophic: for the environment as well as for the people. Most of the textiles are produced by seamstresses in southern countries: at rock-bottom wages and without social benefits.
Carmen Lama from St. Gallen shows that there is another way. With her fashion label TGIFW, she employs seamstresses in Nepal at living wages and with corresponding social benefits. "Fair Wear" or "Slow Fashion" instead of "Fast Fashion".
Philipp Bürkler talks to Carmen Lama about the dark side of the fashion industry, about changing consumer behaviour and the possible ways out of the ecological and social crisis of the fashion industry through "Fair Fashion".
